Attention: MLM and Direct Sales!

We've noticed over the past year or so that multi-level marketing and direct sales companies have really taken off--probably because of the recession and the fact that people are looking for ways to earn extra income. If you are one of these, we wish you the best of luck in your new business! I'm not much of a sales(wo)man myself, and I admire those that are good at it.

However, I am good at bookkeeping and at schedule C, the tax form where you report the income from your new business. Many, probably most, MLM companies don't provide their salespeople with good information about the tax implications of the business, and unless you have some background to begin with, you will be unprepared for the taxes you owe and you may miss the opportunity for some tax breaks.
